WHAT IS CELIAC DISEASE

INFOPARENTS.COM: Celiac disease(also known as gluten enteropathy),is an inherited condition, affecting 1 in 100- 200 pepople in the USA, is an intollerence to gluten. In otherwords the intestine does not have the capacity to digest gluten. Gluten is a protein found in various wheats(durum, kamut spelt), rye, barley and triticale. Symptoms can develop at any age after ingestion of gluten. In children with Celiac disease, gluten damages the intesine. When the intestine is damaged, it cannot absorb nutrients well. The damage caused by the gluten, can result in malnutririon, anemia and nutritional deficiencies.

Symptoms of celiac disease

The symptoms are due mostly to the fact that children with Celiac disease cannot absorb the necessay nutrients. The symotoms can vary from one person to another, but in children the symptoms include:

  • Delayed growth or failure to thrive
  • Irritabilty or behaviour changes
  • Vomiting
  • Dental abnormalities
  • Delayed puberty
  • Abdominal bloating or distension(a big "belly")

    What is Dermatitis herpetiformis?

    This is Celiac diseas of the skin, where the skin is ithcy and blistering. The rash is found on elbows, knees, buttiocks, neck and upper back.
