ADHD-GOALS OF TREATMENT

INFOPARENTS.COM: Once the diagnosis of ADHD has been made, the next step is to work out a treatment program to help the child realize his or her full potential. Intervention is crucial at this point, as the ADHD child who is left untreated is a risk of developing serious long term social, academic and emotional problems

Since ADHD affects many areas of a child's life, a team of people should be brought together to cooperatively develop strategies to address the child's different needs. This team should include the parents, teachers, a physician, and the ADHD child. It may also include a child psychologist or psychiatrist, therapists, special educators, school administrators, a family counsellor, or possibly others.

The treatment program itself should consist of a combination of strategies. Proven treatment strategies include behaviour modification, a specialized education program, and in many cases, the monitored use of prescribed medications. Sometimes counselling may also be needed for secondary problems such as poor self-esteem, anxiety, depression or a learning disorder. As many children with ADHD have a lot of trouble making and keeping friends, both at home and school, the treatment goals should focus on both social and academic aspects of the child's life.

The good news is that with a thoughtfully developed program of management strategies and effective medical treatment, the ADHD child can learn to manage his or her condition and grow up to be a healthy and successful adult.
