SYMPTOMS OF ADHD

INFOPARENTS.COM: ADHD practically always appears before the age of 7, and often before the age of 4. Boys are diagnosed with ADHD about three times more often than girls. The three main symptoms of untreated ADHD are:

  • Impulsive behaviour - In other words the child often doesn't think before he acts or speaks.
  • Attention deficit - The child often has difficulty paying attention or staying focused on one activity.
  • Hyperactivity - The child is often excessively active or restless.

For a diagnosis of ADHD to be considered, symptoms of inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity must have persisted for at least six months, to a degree that's inappropriate for the child's age. These symptoms must have been present in the child before the age of seven, and must be consistently exhibited in at least two settings, such as both at home and at school. Symptoms must also be severe enough to be significantly impairing the child's social and academic functioning.

    About ADD

In some children, the only two symptoms are impulsivity and inattentiveness, without hyperactivity. This is referred to ADD, attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity. For the most part, the evaluation and treatment approach is the same for both ADD and ADHD.
