VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER CESAREAN SECTION(VABC)

INFOPARENTS.COM: A Cesarean section(C-section) delivery is performed for a variety of reasons including a slow or difficult labour and a breech birth. In the past, because of fears that C-section leaves a scar on the wall of the uterus, doctors recommended a repeat C-section for the next pregnancy. However today we know that a vaginal birth is still a safe option for the majority of women who have had a C-section. Of course this depends on the individual situation and circumstances.

What are the risks of VABC?

A C-Section leaves a scar on the uterus that weaknes it and so it can tear during the uterine contractions of labour. If a "uterine rupture" occurs an emergency C-section is required.

Benefits of a Vaginal Delivery

Aside from being less painful, the benefits of having a VABC include:

  • less blood loss
  • less risk of infection
  • elimination of complications associated with surgery
  • shorter hospital stay and more rapid recovery
