HERBAL REMEDIES DURING PREGNANCY..SAFE?

INFOPARENTS.COM: Many women are surprised to find out that not all herbal remedies are safe to take during pregnancy or even breastfeeding. Just because something is sold or marketed as "a natural product" does not mean that is is automatically safe. In fact, certain herbs cause miscarriage while others can affect the growth and development of your baby. Here is a helpful list of herbal remedies considered safe or unsafe during pregnancy(and during breastfeeding):

  • Raspberry leaf tea is considered SAFE
  • Ginger and Peppermint, safe in limited amounts

    Safety not established:(best avoided)

  • Echinacea
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Ginkgo
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Tea tree oil

    Potentially dangerous herbs, TO BE AVOIDED:

  • Black Cohosh
  • Burdock
  • Calendula
  • Chaste Tree
  • Dong Quai
  • Feverfew
  • Ginseng
  • Hops
  • Juniper
  • Kava
  • Licorice (as an herb)
  • Passionfl ower
  • Valerian
  • Uva-ursi
  • Wild Yam
  • Blue cohosh to stimulate labour is dangerous
