HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD BECOME A SUCCESSFUL READER?

INFOPARENTS.COM: Researchers in reading indicate that children whose parents read and model reading activities lay an important foundation for helping children to read. Reading to a child exposes him/her to vocabulary that enhances a child's language acquisition. Playing with words (i.e rhyming) helps a child manipulate the sounds in a word.

Discovering the beats in a word (i.e. syllables) further enhances their ability to understand that words are made up of different sounds.

Familiarity with print helps children to visualize what form a word takes. Pointing out and reinforcing words in the child's environment (e.g. toothpaste) gives many children the encouragement to begin to try to reproduce words in their own stories. Often the child's name is their first attempted word!

Regular visits to libraries and the ability to choose books of their own again contributes to the child's understanding that reading is a valued and enjoyable activity.
