HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD BECOME MORE SUCCESSFUL IN MATH?

INFOPARENTS.COM: Playing with number, space and time are general guidelines for helping a child develop efficiency in math. Concepts such as "more than" or "less than" can be emphasized in play. Filling containers with water and sand introduce concepts such as "like," "different from" or the "same."

Recognizing shapes (i.e. square, circle, triangle) and patterns (i.e. string beads in a color sequence) lay important foundations for math concepts. Matching these shapes, patterns and sequences are also important.

Number rhymes are fun for children and counting familiar objects gives meaning to the number names. Calendar play is another way to help children recognize important numbers for them (i.e. birth date). In fact, rituals around birthdays help bring about a child's number sense- their age, everyone else's age, candles on a cake, etc.
