WHAT SKILLS SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE TO SUCCEED IN KINDERGARTEN?

INFOPARENTS.COM: Very generally, kindergarten teachers often expect that a 5 year old youngster have experience listening to an adult and following simple directives. A willingness to begin and stop activities upon directions is also important, as well as concentration during tasks.

Some self-care activities such as toileting, simple dressing and care of personal belongings (i.e. bringing things to school, putting their things away) is helpful to any child beginning to learn in a group. If a child has special needs, this information should be shared with the school as soon as possible, to facilitate school program planning.

Many kindergarten teachers will also observe how a child uses language to name objects or tell a story.

Experience with books is to the child's benefit, especially listening to a story, holding books, turning pages and interest in the characters, as well as the pictures. Using objects functionally, sorting, matching and manipulating them are precursors to math instruction. Scribbling, drawing lines and circles and simple figures are foundation activities upon which teachers will construct their beginning academic curriculum.
