HOW DO I FIND A GOOD SCHOOL FOR MY CHILD?

INFOPARENTS.COM: For many parents, the neighborhood is the most reasonable place to start. Children form friendships and the participatory aspect of being in a community is often where people will choose to live. Some further determinants of parents' decision- making might include:

  • Checking the school's web-site. What are the school's mission and vision statements saying? Do these statements reflect some of your family's values and practices?
  • Does the school incorporate "best educational practices?" These are research-based applications that are currently guiding the delivery of educational services. Often report cards will reflect the kinds of practices and assessment that give families information about what and how their child is learning.
  • What kinds of extra-curricular activities are sponsored by the school? School yearbooks and newsletters regularly reflect the variety of school activities, participation levels and the emphasis the school may place on the activity.
  • What qualifications do the teaching personnel need to work in the school? Does it conform to the local school board norms?
